"A Cabinet Card of a couple", plain back no writing
"A Religious Procession" my photo by F. Bailey, Photographer, Canterbury The church that is in the background is St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Do you know what this procession is for? If so please contact me
The houses in the background of this photo are from Roper Road. Why the men are standing here is still a mystery. We believe this might be the gathering for the start of a parade, possibly of ex. military men. They likely would have "paraded" down St. Dunstan's street, through the Westgate and ended up in the Dane John.
In the early 1880's Frank was 8 years old and going to school, the family were living at 9 St. John's Lane in St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. His father Charles is a Garment Dyer. Ten years later, Frank is living at 17 St. John's lane with his family, he is working as a Photographer's Assistant for one of the other photographers in the City. His brother Edgar is a Printer's Assistant, and his eldest brother William is a Draper's Porter. Frank continued to work as a Photographer's Assistant, and in the early 1900's, he's unmarried and living at home with his parents Charles and Annie Bailey at 17 St. John's Lane, his young brother John, is now working as a Stationer's Assistant. The family were living beside Thomas TERRY. There is a record of a marriage in 1910, in Canterbury of a Frank Bailey which might be him. 1913 Dir. - Frank Bailey, 15 Castle Street, Canterbury - listed under Photographers 1917 - 15 Castle Street - Wedding Groups a Specialty 1934 Frank BAILEY, photographer, 75 Castle Street, Canterbury |
