~ HANNAH MARIA TERRY ~

CANTERBURY

Hannah was born sometime in the Spring or Summer of 1860. She was baptised at St. Alphege in Canterbury by her parents Eliza and John Terry on September 23, 1860, just as the rest of her siblings were.

__

In 1861 when the census was taken in Canterbury, Hannah was just 2 months old. The family was living at 9 Black Friars North at the time. Ten years later, in 1871 we know that Hannah was in school, and the family was still living on Black Friars.

In the Spring of 1880, when Hannah was 20, she married Thomas Fluwell Grantham in Canterbury. Thomas was 29, and was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, around 1851. The couple were probably married at St. Alphege, unless John and Eliza had already moved to 11 Old Dover Road.

If they were living on Old Dover Road, with her parents, they might have been married at St. Mary Bredin. Another possibility is, like her siblings, she might have been married at the Register’s Office. Thomas moved to Canterbury sometime between 1871 and 1880, possibly to find work. I don’t think he had any family in the area, as he is the only Grantham listed in the 1881 Census in Canterbury, Kent.

In 1871 he was living as a boarder at 83 Queen Street in Horncastle, Lincolnshire with the Jobson family. He could have been either just finished or was finishing an apprenticeship as he was 21. He was working as a Printer & Compositor at this time. We need the marriage certificate to confirm both of their residences, and his fathers name, in order to do a little more research on his family.

In 1881 Hannah and Thomas were living with Hannah’s parents John and Eliza Terry at 11 Old Dover Road (the other side of the city from
Black Friars). Thomas was working as a Printer, possibly with one of the Newspapers, or a Private Printer. Hannah was working as a Milliner. The couple did not have any children yet.

Their first child Charles Frank was born sometime in 1882 in Canterbury. Their second son, Sidney Howard Grantham was born at the end of the year in 1883 in Canterbury. They might have given Sidney the middle name “Howard” in honour of Hannah’s mothers maiden name. The couples first girl, Amy Beatrice Grantham was born between June and September 1887, in Canterbury.

In 1891 the family was living at 9 High Street in the parish of St. Mary Bredman, Canterbury. Thomas was 40 and still working as a Printer. Their second daughter Minnie Adelina (Adeline) Grantham was born in the Summer of 1891. The couples last child Hilda Florence Grantham was born in the Spring of 1898.

In 1901 the family was living at 38 Kent Avenue in Ashford. Thomas was 50 and working as a Printers Compositor. Hannah was 40, with no profession listed, maybe at this time, she had no need to work. Their son Sidney who was 17, was now working as a Printers Clerk, most likely with his father. There was also a boarder living with the family, a Mr. George T. Botsford age 20,who was working as an ironmongers assistant.

In 1901, the couples eldest son Charles who was 20, was no longer living at home. It would seem that he was finishing up his apprenticeship as an Electrical Engineer, in the township of Folkestone. He was lodging at 4 Coolinge Road, with the Mills family. George Mills was a Carpenter & Joiner.

I found Thomas listed in the 1903 Kelly’s Trade/Private Residents Directory for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The family was still living at 38 Kent Avenue.
